The Helderberg Mountain region is known to produce Cabernet Sauvignon characterised by earthy aromatics, well-textured tannins and fresh finishes. These are some of the factors that contribute towards the area’s renown for wines with brilliant ageing potential. Little wonder that Cabernet Sauvignon is a leading varietal on Waterford Estate thanks to the sublime terroir provided by our vineyards with prime positioning on the Helderberg’s slopes.
The well- drained soils are perfectly suited to the growth of this varietal, driven by deep sandstone parent rocks and layered gravel with sporadic deposits of schist. The underlying clay in these soils helps to buffer against the heat experienced in Stellenbosch during the summer months.
