Waterford Elgin Pinot Noir

R325
Bigger barrels are used, no new oak. The oldest barrel in the cellar is used for this wine. A barrel from 1998, Waterford Estate’s first vintage.
A slightly richer colour in comparison to previous vintages. The aromatics are layered with ripe wild berries, cherry tobacco and savoury cherry tomatoes. The palate also shows robust and intense but still vibrant and elegant flavours, which is in line with the character of Pinot Noir. The wine finishes with a lovely coating and savoury flavour and a refreshing balanced acidity. A wine promising to age gracefully over 10 years.
Sourced from a single vineyard in the higher-lying area of Elgin. Cooler climate with more slate, sandstone and quartz soil types which drives a more elegant style and textured wine.

Single vineyard – The Waterford range is well known for terroir specific wines. In this case the Pinot Noir is carefully sourced from a single vineyard in Elgin, the best suited terroir for the growth of Pinot Noir, with a slightly cooler climate than Stellenbosch. Once the grapes are harvested, they are transported to Waterford Estate for vinification. A very natural approach is followed in order to best express the characteristics of the surroundings of the vineyards. When compared to previous vintages, the 2017 Pinot Noir vintage has a modern edge. The drought meant that the winemaking team had more control over the growth and ripening of the vineyards, helping them to produce a fresher wine.
